BGDM Member Films and Honorees at DOC NYC 2023

Lissa Deonarain • October 31, 2023

It's time again for DOC NYC, one of the biggest — if not the biggest — documentary film festival in the United States. Every year, our list of members with films on the program grows longer, including a ton of BGDM names on DOC NYC lists like the 2023 Short List, 40 Under 40 and Documentary New Leaders! Get all the details about what films are playing, who is getting some shine this year and other exciting news.

DOC NYC 40 UNDER 40

Each year, DOC NYC celebrates up and coming directors, producers, cinematogrpahers and editors in the doc field with DOC NYC 40 Under 40. This year, Brown Girls Doc Mafia had eight members make the Class of 2023. These talented BIPOC women and nonbinary members never cease to amaze us, and we're glad to see we're not the only ones paying attention.

The BGDM Mafiosxs who made the list are: Rebecca Adorno Davila, Zaynê Akyol, Jude Chehab, Alma Herrera-Pazmiño, Naimah Jabali-Nash, Jean Rheem, Sierra Urich and Inaya Graciana Yusuf.

DOC NYC DOCUMENTARY NEW LEADERS

There's more than just filmmakers in this industry! DOC NYC's Documentary New Leaders uplifts the people working behind the scenes in documentary. From funding to community, these are the people who keep things moving.

The six BGDM Mafiosxs on the Class of 2023 include: Natalie Bullock Brown (Documentary Accountability Working Group), Lailanie Gadia (A-Doc), Anjanette Levert (Spelman College), Kiyoko McCrae (Chicken & Egg Pictures), Kristal Sotomayor (Sotomayor Productions), and Prerana Thakurdesai (Bitchitra Collective).

DOC NYC VISIONARIES TRIBUTE

A BGDM member is yet again being honored at the DOC NYC Visionaries Tribute and taking home a Leading Light Award. Congrats to Erika Dilday, Executive Director of American Documentary and the Executive Producer of its award-winning documentary series POV and America ReFramed. We're so glad to have two members win this award consecutively, and are blown away by the work and legacy Erika brings to the world.

BGDM MEMBER FILMS AT DOC NYC 2023
