Biography
Producer⠀Anjanette Levert⠀is the Director of the Documentary Film Program at Spelman College. She is also a programmer/curator of film events and coaches and consults with aspiring and emerging filmmakers. A graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, she worked for an English-language newspaper in the Dominican Republic, The Santo Domingo News. After a number of years in broadcast journalism at CNN Atlanta, she moved to NYC and entered documentary filmmaking by earning her MFA specializing in Documentary from City College of New York. After 15 years, she returned to Atlanta to help boost the independent filmmaking and documentary community, starting the Atlanta Doc Meetup. She helped launch the first documentary film program at an Historically Black College/University alongside legendary filmmakers Ayoka Chenzira Ph.D and Julie Dash. She became the program’s director in school year 2021-2022. In 2020, Levert became a New Orleans Film Festival Southern Producer’s Lab fellow and more recently was accepted as a writing fellow at the Arquetopia (Foundation) Residency in Oaxaca, Mexico. She’s the producer for a feature-documentary on Southern rural health, The Only Doctor, by Matthew Hashiguchi; associate Producer for Black Voters Matter by Daresha Kyi and Producer Trevite Wilis. She’s in post-production on her short film about the 2019 Grand Marshal of Mobile Alabama’s Mardi Gras.
