If you’re a woman or nonbinary person of color working in documentary, submit your application today to become a member!

Becoming a Brown Girls Doc Mafia (BGDM) member lets you set up a profile in our Member Directory to showcase your talent and grants you exclusive access to the Job Portal. You’ll also be invited to join our private Mighty Networks online community, full of resources, events, opportunities, and chances to connect with other members and more. Offline, we host regular meet-ups, a chance for our members to make in-person connections. We’ve even held virtual karaoke meet-ups with members on spaceships!

BGDM also hosts events and creates opportunities for members to access and gain visibility at top festivals and gatherings. In addition to pairing key stakeholders with members at Industry Mixers, we compile and distribute Meet the Members, BGDM’s guide to our members with projects in the program or who are in attendance at the event.

What requirements are there for membership? 

Potential members must self-identify as

  • BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color),
  • as a woman, gender nonconforming/non-binary, or trans individual,
  • as a professional documentary filmmaker or an industry stakeholder,
  • or be seeking a career in the documentary field.

Can gender nonconforming/non-binary and trans people of color be a part of BGDM?

Yes! Gender nonconforming/non-binary and trans people of color working in documentary are encouraged to become active members of our community. BGDM strives to be inclusive and to actively challenge the binary gender systems that oppress us all. We are continuously working on ways to improve our support of these communities.

When will I hear back about my membership application?

New membership applicants will undergo a vigorous verification process to determine that they meet the minimum requirements. Applicants can expect to hear back within 2-3 weeks regarding their membership status.
