DOC NYC is back, celebrating the best in documentary storytelling from around the world. As the largest documentary film festival in the United States, it has long been a hub for discovering bold voices, groundbreaking films, and fresh perspectives that shape the future of nonfiction cinema. The 16th annual edition runs November 12–20 in person at the IFC Center, SVA Theatre, and Village East by Angelika, and continues online through November 30.
If you’re attending in person, be sure to check out our Meet the Member Directory to connect with other Mafiosxs and make the most of your DOC NYC experience. This year, we’re thrilled to share that BGDM members worked on more than 70 projects featured throughout the festival, showcasing their talent across films, shorts, and series that reflect the richness and range of our community. Explore which of our members are premiering and learn more about their projects below.
DOC NYC VISIONARY TRIBUTE
Wow, — just wow! We’re beyond proud to share that this year’s DOC NYC Visionary Tribute honorees include incredible BGDM members who have been longtime forces in our community. The Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes a distinguished body of documentary work, will be presented to Michèle Stephenson, alongside her creative partner Joe Brewster. That’s not all! The BGDM OG Elizabeth Lo, a visionary Hong Kong–born filmmaker whose powerful storytelling has captivated audiences worldwide, will recieve the Robert and Anne Drew Award for Documentary Excellence. Her work has screened at Venice, Sundance, Tribeca, and MoMA, and she’s been celebrated as one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film,” DOC NYC’s “40 Under 40,” and Cannes Lions’ “New Directors Showcase.”
