Biography

Sapana Sakya’s background is in journalism and documentary filmmaking. She recently returned from four years in Nepal, working with the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (kimff) to create kimff Doc Lab supporting Nepali filmmakers. Currently, she is the Talent Development & Special Projects Manager at the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM). Sapana designs and coordinates the filmmaker support programs including the Filmmaker Summit and CAAM Fellowship. Additionally, she is instrumental in launching CAAM's South Initiative. In her previous work with CAAM, she was Public Media Director. She trained with distinguished filmmaker Jon Else at the University of California, Berkeley and has since produced and directed several documentaries (Daughters of Everest, Red White Blue November, Oklahoma Home). She currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, California with her partner and two daughters.

Active Projects

Guruma is a character driven documentary profiling Buddhist nun (aka Guruma) Dhammawati. Dhammawati Guruma is the first Nepali woman to attain the highest level of academic standing in the Theravada Buddhism tradition. She left home at the age of 15 to pursue Buddhist studies and walked from Nepal through India to Myanmar in the 1950s. After her religious training, she returned to Nepal and started an all-female monastic center in the heart of Kathmandu.
