Biography

Carrie Hawks (they/them) is a multidisciplinary artist working in animation, drawing, collage, sculpture, and performance. Their art confronts self-imposed and external assumptions about identity in order to promote healing, particularly in relation to Blackness, gender, and queer sexuality. They focus on stories that are not being represented enough. Their art exudes strength in its honesty, craft, and visual metaphors. Drawing upon personal insecurities, confusion, and fear, they invite the audience to do the same. Incorporating humor and hand crafted elements invites others into the experience. Their film black enuf* has been nominated for a New York Emmy, won Best Documentary Short at Trans Stellar Film Festival among other award, was broadcast on American Public Television’s World Channel in 2019, and screened at over 40 festivals including Ann Arbor and BlackStar. The Jerome Foundation gave generous funding to black enuf* They have performed with Black Women Artist for Black Lives Matter, and participated in the Jerome @ Carmargo Residency in Cassis, France.

They were selected for the Leslie Lohman Queer Artist Fellowship in 2018 and as a Jerome Foundation Artist Fellow in 2019. Their recent documentary Inner Wound Real premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in 2022 and recevied funding for winning a pitch at Black Public Media's 360 Incubator. They are currently working on an animated narrative piece.
