Biography

Jamila Wignot is an award-winning, Brooklyn-based filmmaker whose work explores the intersections of history, culture, and identity. She invites audiences into experiential journeys highlighting the profound power of individuals engaged in acts of becoming and works that interrogate the systems and institutions that shape our past and present.

From the rhythmic history of Emmy nominated and Peabody Award-winning STAX: Soulsville, U.S.A. to the lyrical movement of AILEY, she focuses on the textures of life that traditional narratives often overlook. Her directorial work also includes Peabody Award-winning Triangle Fire and the Emmy-nominated Walt Whitman for American Experience, as well as the expansive series The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross, which garnered the Peabody, Emmy, Dupont, and NAACP awards.

Beyond directing, Wignot has served as a producer on wide-ranging projects including the archival collage RIOTSVILLE, USA, the New York Times series The Weekly, W. Kamau Bell’s Bring the Pain, and A STRAY by Musa Syeed.
