Biography

Amber Akaunu⠀is an award-winning Nigerian-German filmmaker, artist, and community arts worker from Liverpool, UK. She uses various mediums as meditations to dive deep into the questions, concerns, and the extraordinary of race and identity; particularly through her lens as a Black "Scouse" woman. Amber's first short film, Afro Hair Rituals, made its TV debut in March 2020 on BBC 4. The film recreates the sacred moments Amber shared with her grandmother while getting her hair. Amber is also a current MA Screen Documentary student at Goldsmiths College in London. This was made possible through her being awarded the BAFTA Kirsch Scholarship for £10,000.

Active Projects

I am currently developing a short documentary for my masters degree on a concept I am calling geographical parallels. The reoccurrence of a location through a family's ancestral history. The film explores the physical and the spiritual of these somewhat uncanny reoccurrences.
