Biography

Sue Ding is a filmmaker and visual artist based in Los Angeles. Her work explores race, gender, and diaspora through the lens of visual culture; she is also interested in multilayered representations of place. Sue is passionate about experimenting with film form, and crafting creative approaches with a strong visual sensibility.

Her directorial work includes the short documentary The Claudia Kishi Club, which premiered at SXSW and was acquired by Netflix, and an Emmy Award-winning episode of the docuseries Artbound. She also directed and edited the short film Makeover Movie, featured in Sight and Sound’s “Best Video Essays of 2022.” Sue’s work has screened at IDFA, Copenhagen Contemporary, REDCAT, and Miami Art Basel. In 2023, she was named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film.”

Sue is also a freelance director and editor for documentary and branded projects, and has produced series for PBS, Firelight Media, Showtime, and The New York Times. She consults and lectures widely on nonfiction filmmaking, and holds a BA from Brown University (Visual Arts) and a MS from MIT (Comparative Media).
