Biography

Hina Ali is a director/producer/editor living in Brooklyn. Ali's body of work reflects her personal journey as a Muslim woman and her passion for storytelling.

She is currently directing and editing her first feature documentary - An Imperfect Daughter. Her recent credits include Unladylike2020, an innovative transmedia project featuring extraordinary American heroines from the early years of feminism timed to the women’s suffrage centennial (PBS American Masters). And two documentaries following the journey of multiple athletes with special needs; from Pakistan, Iran, Jordan, and the United States; participating in the World Games.

Previously, Ali was the Additional Editor and Associate Producer for Emmy nominated feature documentary ‑ Among the Believers. She was also the AE and AP for Insh'Allah Democracy, a feature documentary about the evolution of democracy in Pakistan (Sheffield Doc Fest 2017, DOC NYC Fest 2017).

Ali has edited and produced films and shows for Vice, Netflix, PBS, BBC, Spotify, Amazon Prime, Starz, Hulu, and Cheddar. Ali wrote the story of 3 Bahadur or Brave 3 in English, Pakistan's first computer-animated 3D feature film.

She is a former Fulbright Scholar-Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow from Arizona State University (2013-14) and Chevening South Asia Journalism Fellow from the University of Westminster (2017).

Active Projects

Ali's debut feature documentary as a director, An Imperfect Daughter follows her as she embarks on a roller coaster ride of immigrant experiences by moving from Pakistan to America in 2017. Thirty-year-old Ali is Muslim, single, and jobless. Her most prominent belongings are her sense of humor, her self-determination, and her love for the American values of freedom and liberty. As she flees pressure from her family to marry, Hina searches for work, love, and home, and films herself surviving isolation, anxiety, racism, heartbreak, and loss of a parent, while embracing her sexuality, and abandoning some of the values/stereotypes/identities that are imposed on her by either people from back home or Americans. All the while, her legal status is in limbo.

Ali is looking to collaborate with fellow filmmakers, share her experiences, her tried and tested knowledge and skills, and learn about them and their style of filmmaking.
