Biography

Miami native,⠀Anna Margarita Albelo⠀is a Cuban-American writer/director and 2020 Spirit Award nominated producer with 20+ years experience specialized in making work with women and people of color in front and behind the camera. Her productions regularly pass the Bechdel, Ava Duvernay, and Vito Russo tests for representation with her feature, _The Never List _receiving the Sundance/WIF 2020 Reframe Stamp for gender-balanced hiring.
As a producer, Anna earned a 2020 John Cassavetes’ Spirit Award nomination for Wild Nights with Emily starring Molly Shannon, produced Palestinian-American Suha Araj’s 2021 Oscar qualifying short, Rosa (streaming on HBOMax), and was coordinating producer for Anthony Bourdain’s last season of The Perfect Dish Asia.
Her award-winning feature, Who's Afraid of Vagina Wolf? was released theatrically in France and her short film, The Turkey, screened at the Cannes Film Festival where Anna served as a juror for the “Queer Palm Award” in 2014 and their ambassador in 2019. Her filmmaking blends narrative, documentary, and comedic elements into a unique story- telling style that has become her trademark. LA Weekly calls her work, “Riveting” and IndieWire spotlighted her as a “Filmmaker to watch!”
Anna spent the first 15 years of her career in France working as a filmmaker and regular collaborator for French network Canal+ writing and directing broadcast documentaries and shorts.

ACCIDENTAL FEMINISTS- Doc series/TV Documentary
The documentary follows the chronological career of Hollywood actresses and their most important roles through the eye of feminism and cultural context. (Pilot: Elizabeth Taylor or 5 part series spanning from the Golden age to 21st Century cinema) Looking for producer/production company for development.

PERIOD PIECE THEATER-Animation series/branded content
Well-known women recount their first, their last, or their worst period narrated over reenactmented animations. Big Mouth meets Drunk History. Looking for producer/production company for development.

LESBIAN CHIC- Documentary
1988 marked the kick-off of a new generation of lesbians, propelled by the mobilization against AIDS, the rise in LGBT visibility in pop culture, and the freedom provided by 3rd wave feminism in the Western world. From Madonna to kd lang to the Christian Dior/Calvin Klein campaigns to the rise and fall of Ellen’s tv series- How lesbians went from invisible to chic. Looking for producer/production company for development.

In fiction, 2 FEATURE FILMS and a TV SERIES:
CLARE AT 16: a dark comedy about a teen girl serial killer written by Guinevere Turner (American Psycho) adapted from a YA novel, produced by Cassian Elwes (Mudbound, The Butler). Looking for additional financing.

THE PAPAYA FACTORY: a Cuban-American coming of age set in 1984 Miami, written by Anna and produced by Issa Rae and Deniese Davis. Currently casting and looking for additional financing.

LA PET SITTER- TV series
An emotionally unavailable bohemian (latina) finally learns about love when she becomes LA’s “It Girl” pet sitter. Looking for producer/production company for development. 2021 Finalist Sundance Episodic Lab
