Biography

June Chua is an award-winning filmmaker with 20 years experience in journalism, writing/editing, broadcasting and communications. She uses her vast experience to focus on documentary grant/proposal writing and story consultations. She has conducted workshops for the Berlinale EFM Toolbox program and for Women Make Movies.

June helped raise more than $700000 in funding for independent films (2020-24) as well aiding in residency applications with BGDMers such as: Pallavi Somusetty, Jalena Keane-Lee, Oya Media Toronto (Ngardy Conteh George & Alison Duke), Kirthi Nath, Amanda Erickson, Princess Hairston, Ari N. Ali, A.K. Sandhu, K Dene Chinn, The Bushwick Film Institute, Katyayani Kumar & Ya-Chi Yang.

She can also write/edit your promotional materials, scripts, and website.

As a story consultant, she has constructed treatments and proposals, reviewed non-fiction scripts, and created winning pitches for her own documentaries and other directors.

In 2009/2010, she landed a Mid-Career Fellowship with the Documentary Organization of Canada (DOC), thus acquiring training in proposal writing and met with commissioning editors, gaining valuable information about pitch assessments.

June has won pitch prizes and grants in Canada. Her documentary, Travels With My Brother, has been screened around the world and won awards. Since 2014, she has concentrated on her writing/editing work and co-created a limited-series podcast in Berlin about the many aspects of migration: THE EMPIRE OF DREAMS on Soundcloud.

During her years in media, she learned how to compose radio and TV stories, produce online news features, write print articles and formulate social media content. As well, she spent 15 years as the arts columnist for rabble.ca, Canada's alternative news source.

June is a Canadian based in Berlin, Germany working internationally.
