Biography
Julia C Liu⠀is a cinematographer, director, and artist interested in telling stories that center BIPOC voices. Her passion for visual storytelling started through her comics, evolving into filmmaking as a way to bring her illustrations to life. While mainly working as a documentary and commercial cinematographer, Julia is excited to tackle any project from experimental dance films to narrative shorts.
Julia is the Director of Photography for the Emmy nominated Netflix feature documentary _Take Your Pills _which premiered at SXSW Film Festival in 2018. Julia is a contributing director to the New York Times’ Emmy-nominated Op-Doc Series and has directed and shot music videos premiering on Stereogum and NPR Music. She recently directed the narrative short Driving While Black Magic which will screen at Urbanworld Film Festival and the Montreal International Black Film Festival in 2020. She also co-wrote and DPed the short narrative film Every Day Struggle.
Julia first cut her teeth in the film industry working as a Camera Assistant on hit shows like Girls, Person of Interest, and White Collar. Since becoming a cinematographer and camera operator, Julia has filmed such faces as Octavia Spencer, Claire Danes, Jim Parsons, and Priyanka Chopra. She has lensed commercials for HBO, Paramount Network, Lego, Merck, and Hewlett Packard. She is a member of the International Cinematographers Guild Local 600 and a graduate of Brown University. She enjoys knitting, rock climbing and drawing comics in her spare time.
