Biography

Arwa Aburawa⠀is a documentary filmmaker and writer with an interest in race, environmental issues and health. She has worked as a documentary producer on Al Jazeera English’s flagship environmental show ‘earthrise’ and their health show ‘The CURE’ and produced documentaries on a range of issues including the water crisis in Iran and the⠀lives of sugarcane workers in El Salvador. Her latest projects are; ‘Truth in Numbers’, a film which explores the work of data journalist Mona Chalabi that was made with an entirely POC crew and ‘The Museum Will Not Be Decolonised’⠀an archive-based film project with Sumaya Kassim. She is currently working on two film projects with Turab Shah, one which explores the legacy of colonialism in Guatemala and an upcoming project exploring the Pakistani migrant experience in Burnley, an old industrial town in northern England. Arwa also co-founded⠀Other Cinemas,⠀a community project which shares the films and stories of black and non-white people in spaces and ways which aren’t alienating to these communities and also runs a small, informal collective of young filmmakers. Arwa is currently editing a zine on reproductive justice and sexual health written entirely by and for Muslim women.
